That would be the farewell that I let out in the tile store the other day. Why? Because I could not believe the words that were coming out of the sales person's mouth. Let me take a step back.
I enter the store a half hour earlier in search of the perfect glass tile for my kitchen backsplash. Although I would rather roll myself in shards of broken glass rather than tile..I knew that this would look perfect in my new kitchen. After countless hours combing the Internet and driving from showroom to showroom, I was determined to find it here, I could feel it, this was the place. I could NOT have been more wrong. Not only was I unprepared for the ridiculousness that was about to unfold, I have since learned that I am incapable of restraint when my intelligence is questioned.
Anyway, I enter the store and I am immediately surrounded by amazing tile, every color, shape, size. It was awesome, truly awesome. I was instantly convinced that if the tile wasn't here, it didn't exist at all. I thought, within seconds, a sales woman would be at my side. Nope, 10 minutes goes by, then 15, then 20, nothing. Mind you, three other couples walk in and they are surrounded. I begin to get that twinge of frustration building up..you know, the one you get when you fell like ..if you don't look like you are going to spend $5000 they don't want to assist you feeling. Finally a sales person. Ahh. Instead of getting a HI! How are you? What Can I do for you? I get...
the once over(I'm still in my weekend work clothes)...I'm growing displeased. I inform the women of my interest in glass tile and this is what occurs:
Sales: Without hesitation.."oh, are you sure, it is really expensive."
Me: I politely say, "Well, I am sure you have tiles in all price ranges, can you direct me to the mid-range tiles. I'm looking specifically for mosaic."
Sales: "All glass tile is expensive, there is no such thing as mid-range glass tile."
Me: "I've been researching a great deal and I think I am interested in precious gem tile. Your website said you specialize in this."
Sales: "You? Precious gems tile? I can't imagine!" This is followed by a second
once over.I AM GROWING INCREASINGLY DISPLEASED
Me: "I really would just like to see your glass tile selection"
Sales: "I don't think we have anything for you to look at"
Me "But your receptionist said you had glass tile"
Sales: "It all costs $100 a square foot or more"
Me: "I find that hard to believe?"
Sales: " I am certain, maybe you should consider ceramic, it will suit you!"
COMPLETE DISPLEASURE!
EXCUSE ME? Suit me? What is this, Pretty Women here? My jeans have paint on them and my hair is pulled back and suddenly I am not worthy of glass tile. Gimme a break. And then to have her treat me as if I have no concept of the product I am there to purchase, really put me over the edge. I think she may have been blown over by how fast I walked out the door. But the jokes on her..I plan on walking in on Saturday with my new "precious gem" glass tile in tow and just laugh and say "You work on commission right???" How does that suit you!
